Reproduction – Packaging Prepress

So your packaging looks on the shelf exactly as approved. With every printer.

Reproduction, or repro for short, turns finished artwork files into print-ready data. We tailor every file to the printer, printing process and substrate, while keeping all components of a pack in view.

What reproduction includes

Our specialists at LINKED transform creative design into technically perfect print data, thus securing the integrity of your Reproduction, also known as packaging prepress, is the step between artwork and print. The content is final; now it's about the technical side. This includes trapping to prevent gaps between adjacent colors, line widths, bar width reduction for readable barcodes, maximum ink coverage and tonal values. We request the values from each printer rather than working with generic standards.

Why the same file doesn't print the same everywhere

Every press prints differently. That's why print color management makes up the largest part of repro: we convert the data, especially images, into the color space of the specific printing process so that it matches the original color target. In offset printing this is largely standardized; in flexo and gravure it is not. Our Color Management page explains where the color profiles come from.

Honest about limits

Good repro gets the best out of the printing conditions. But it cannot change what the substrate and process physically allow. With profile and proof, we see early on how a motif will look in print. Where a limit is reached, we tell you before the press starts running.

One repro for the entire pack

A yogurt has a carton sleeve, an aluminum lid and secondary packaging, often printed by three different printers. If each printer's own prepress handles the repro, every supplier optimizes its part in isolation. Central repro brings all components together so they appear on the shelf as one brand. That's why some clients commission us for reproduction only.
